Mobile phones have made it easy for livestock farmers to send photos or videos of an animal’s problem to a veterinarian. But simply sending a photo is not enough—the photo should also be clear and useful.
For a wound, take one wider photo to show its location on the body and another close-up to show the lesion clearly. For swelling, comparison photographs of both sides may help. If the animal is having difficulty walking, a short walking video can provide more information than a still photograph alone.
Along with the photo, mention the animal’s age, how long the problem has been present, temperature if available, appetite, rumination and any medicine already given.
A mobile photograph cannot replace a physical examination, but a clear photo together with good background information can make initial guidance much more useful.
